And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. Isaiah 54:13 KJV

SPECIAL Kroger Cartbuster Event

Y'all know I LOVE Kroger. Well from February 27-March 12, they are giving us even more reasons to love them! Kroger will be beginning a SPECIAL Cartbuster event beginning tomorrow!! WOOHOO! The event will include special pricing on your favorite brands like P&G, General Mills, Nestle, and Pepsi. Want even more discounts?? Go on Facebook and "Like" the Kroger page.  Keep an eye on it because they will have special promos there!

My favorite tips for a good Kroger sale:

*Get a Kroger card and register it with your address. It's free and they mail out terrific coupons! Most packets have at least 1 coupon to get a product free!

*Remember to have a base price for your most used products. If you have an idea of a "normal" price per item, then you will know when it really is a sale.

*Get your coupons ready! Check not only the Sunday paper inserts, but also & for coupons loaded directly on your Kroger card. Both now have mobile apps to use on your phone while you are at the store! Also check out,, and for printable coupons!

*Kroger doubles coupons up to .60 EVERYDAY!

*Grab an ad instore or at BEFORE your shopping trip so that you can have a detailed list ready! Check them out this week as they give away items once each day for this promotion!

*Take your coupon binder or folder with you! Lots of times Kroger has items included in their sales that are not on the ad. This is a great time to stack deals!

*Don't be afraid to "stockpile." Buy up a larger supply especially things that are nonperishable or can be frozen. Remember you can freeze milk, cheese, meat, sandwich meat, hot dogs, etc. Most items only go on sale about once every 3 months. Things like cereal, oatmeal, soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, rice, and pasta store well for several months at a time.

I will definately be at this Cartbuster event with my coupon binder and list in hand!! Probably more than once! Make sure you take a look at it, even if you aren't a regular Kroger shopper. Check back on my blog the next few days to see a write up of the deals I get! UPDATED! SEE MY MATCHUPS HERE.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms Kroger CartBuster blogging program, for a gift card worth $50. For more information on how you can participate, click here.

Kroger Deals

Okay Melanie~ this one is for you!!! I am going to spell these deals out as well as I can! Kroger is doing their Daytona 500 deal again this week. With this deal you can purchase 10 "special" items and you receive $3 off instantly AND a $3 coupon for your next trip to Kroger. You can do this multiple times so 20 items= $6 off and 2-$3 coupons, etc.

I'm going to start off with an item that had even GREATER savings. For the Betty Crocker Gushers, Fruit Rollups, and/or Fruit by the Foot you get an extra coupon towards your next transaction for purchasing multiples. 3 bxs= $1 coupon, 4 bxs= $2 coupon, 5 or more bxs= $3 coupon

I mixed and matched 6 boxes of Betty Crocker snacks. I did this because I had 3 coupons to use on them that were .50 off of 2 bxs. These were also part of the Daytona special so this is what it looked like:

6 boxes at the "special" price of $1.69/ box=$10.14- 3 coupons for .50/2= $10.14-1.50= $8.64- .50 coupons are doubled at Kroger so $8.64-1.50= $7.14 (out of pocket today). Then at the end I got back $3 off coupon (for buying 10 items so .30 off per box) PLUS another $3 off coupon (for buying 5+ Betty Crocker snacks) means it was like I paid $2.34 for  6 boxes!!!

I also bought 3 packs of Pillsbury Break & Bake Cookie Dough. "Special" price of $2.19 each. I had a coupon printed from for $1.50 off of 3 packs. I also had a $1 off of two ECoupon added on my Kroger card from and a .75 off 1 ECoupon on my Kroger probably from So I had $6.57-$1-.75-$1.50=$3.32 (out of pocket today). Then they counted towards my 10 which is like getting an extra .30 off per pack making it $2.42 for 3 packs!!!!!

Chef Boyrdee (sp?) was also included in the "special". They were .69 on special. I had a coupon for a FREE one from a special. They took off .99 for it because that was the original price so it was a .30 money maker! Plus it made me an extra .30 because it went toward my 10 items so they basically paid me .60 to take it! (HA! And I normally don't buy that product!)

I did another 10 items. The Pillsbury Grands biscuits were in the special for .99 a can. I bought 3. I had a coupon for .40/ 3. So that becomes .80/ 3 after it is doubled. That means it was 2.97-.80= $2.17. Then I had an ECoupon from for .30 off. So it became $2.17-.30= $1.87 (out of pocket today). Extra .30 off each for 10 item coupon towards next transaction made it like paying .97 for 3 cans of Grands!!!

Hefty One Zip Bags are "special" price of $1.19 a box. I got 2 for $2.38. There were .15 off coupons on the boxes I wasn't expecting so that made them 2 for $2.08 (don't know why the .15 didn't double but it was ok!). Then I had a coupon for $1 off of 2. So I got 2 for $1.08 (out of pocket). After the coupon for next transaction it was like paying .48 for 2 boxes!!!!!!

Duncan Hines Cake mix was in the special for .69. I bought 3 for $2.07. I had an internet coupon for buy 2 get 1 free. So I paid $1.38 for 3 (out of pocket). Subtract .30 each for the next trans coupon means it was like paying .78 for 3 cake mixes!!!!

I also added in 2 Kraft BBQ sauces on special for $1.38/2 (out of pocket). Take away .30 each for coupon for next trans means I paid .78 for 2!!!!!

And I have $9 worth of coupons for my next Kroger trip.

Also on sale were 4 pack Dannon Light n Fit Yogurt for $1.88. I had .40 coupon that was doubled making it $1.08.

Land o Lakes butter was on sale for $1. I had a .50 coupon that was doubled making the butter FREE!

Some Kellogg's cereal was $2.50 a box. I had 2 different $1 off a box coupons (for specific flavors) so I got 2 boxes for $1.50 each.

Happy Krogering!! :)

New Approach

Many of you have read my frustrations with Apple and her Hooked on Spelling. The program itself is good but has been tedious for my fastpaced princess. So last week we tried a new approach (and it's working)! The whole reason I bought the program at Christmas was that she was not progressing with spelling. She can read pretty much anything now but if she wanted or need to write something it was "How do you do you do you spell....?" Not good! So we bought it and she worked on it and she got frustrated with all the repetition. Okay so starting last week we eliminated the CD ROM portion. The program comes with a CD Rom and workbooks and some cards (we've never used the cards). I have started reading the spelling list from the workbook out loud to her. The deal has been if you can spell all the words, you don't have to do the computer part. Lo and behold she has been able to spell all the words! Amazing! ;) So now she just has to spell the words, then complete the workbook. Voila! Less frustration all around! (Thanks Melly for the fabulous idea!)

So now she is on track to complete HOP 2nd grade by the end of this school year. I have been on the look out for something for her for next fall. I'm thinking more reading comprehension and readers, rather than a traditional all in one curriculum. Any suggestions?

I'm also looking ahead for math. Just as a refresher, we have used all workbooks and manipulatives for this year. The workbooks have all been 1st grade ones. She is doing money pennies, nickels, dimes, & quarters so far, time to the hour and half hour, adding and subtracting up to double digits, counting to 100, skip counting, and other review things like shapes, sequencing, more than, less than, etc. So now I'm wondering do I buy her a good 1st grade curriculum, good 2nd grade curriculum, or something more like a 1st-6th grade curriculum? Keeping in mind my budget is tiny. As much as I would love one of those $300 all in ones, ain't gonna happen unless someone gives me one! So I'm open to suggestions!

That's about it for now. We are still moving right along. I will say one of my favorite perks is that on days when I don't feel as well (like yesterday and today), we can move at a slower pace and make up for it another day!

Review: Pujols More Than the Game

Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth (who lives in the same town I do! I was pleasantly surprised to see that on the back flap) have done an excellent job of summarizing the life and career of Albert Pujols. Reading this book will give you much insight in Pujols, a St Louis Cardinals player. Fortunately this isn't the tail of your everyday modern athlete. Pujols is well known not only for his remarkable baseball talent but also for his pursuit of living for Jesus. Lamb and Ellsworth give page after page of positive information on a positive player. Pujols knows that baseball is just his platform for sharing the love of Jesus. He and his wife Deidre have created the Pujols Family Foundation. PFF provides support to orphanages and other programs in the Dominican Republic, Pujols birthplace, and to Downs Syndrome programs, they have a child with Downs.

This book follows Pujols from his birth in the DR to school in the United States to his time in the minor leagues to his beginning as a Redbird. There are a lot of numbers in the book. Baseball is a numbers and stats game. There is also a lot of information about Pujols beliefs and Christian foundation. I was glad to read this book about a player that I can teach my kids about. A player that means something when he points a finger to the sky after every home run he scores. A player that is trying his best to live his life above reproach. Not because it looks good for himself, but because it gives a life testiment to Christ.

Often compared to great baseball legends, Pujols natural ability is rare. He is well known as a hard worker, a team leader, and a great person both on the diamond and off. Pujols has visited fans injured at games in the hospital. Not many major leaguers would take that time. He hosts several Down Syndrome events each year and he attends each of them. Not as a speaker to rush out the back door when the speech is done, but as an attendee to mingle with the crowd (although I'm sure he does speak at most of them). He has a loving relationship with his wife and children. He is well respected by fellow players and rival team members. Pujols is a breath of fresh air in a time of spoiled and tacky celebs and athletes.

If you are in the mood for a great sports story, amazing stats, and even more amazing personal stories of a Christian, this is the one for you!

I received this book from at no cost for the purpose of this review.  The review is my personal opinion.

Couponing Tips

By request here are some couponing tips if you are just getting started or want to improve your coupon savy!

By far the best coupons and deals are still found in the old reliable Sunday paper. I use sites like Sunday Coupon Preview to know how many inserts to expect in the paper. Most weeks I now buy 2-3 Sunday papers. In order to take advantage of some of the best specials, you need at least 2 copies of the coupon.

Also the Sunday paper is where you will find your Walgreens ad. The drug stores have some of the best stockpiling deals! Unfortunately the only one in my area is Walgreens, so those are the only specials I will post. Check out sites like Hip2Save for Rite Aid and CVS specials. Also Walgreens usually has an in store coupon book every month. Just walk in and pick up a couple at their ad stand. Most drugstores have special offers with catalinas(coupons that print at the register for your next purchase). Catalinas are great ways to stack savings!

Many stores now have their weekly ads on their websites. This is where I get my weekly Kroger ad. Of course you also want to use to load electronic coupons on your Kroger card! Another great site to load coupons directly to your card is You just set up an account with your loyalty card and click to add!

Also many large chains ve coupon policies available on their websites. It's good to be familiar with the policy of each store. You may even want to print a copy to carry with you in case store employees aren't well trained on the policy. For example, Walgreens policy allows you to use one Walgreens coupon PLUS one manufactor coupon per item purchased. Good to know for stacking!

Hook up your computer printer and check out,, and for great printable coupons! They add to their databases often, so check back often. Save ink and only print ones you really think you will use though!

All you magazine is a fabulous coupon resource! Pick up the magazine at WalMart or get a subscription. Each issue is full of coupons. Also check out their website where they often have printable coupons available.

I think being organized is a key. Keep your coupons organized by catergory. Be sure to read your coupon carefully and check the expiration date. Get a good idea of "regular" prices on your favorite items so you will know when a "sale" price is really a deal! Also taking a game plan and list into the store with you helps you to get the best price AND to cut down on impulse spending. My list usually looks like:

Red Baron pan pasta or pizza $3.99- $1 x 3
Item sale price-coupon x number I plan to buy

Check Facebook for your favorite products. Many of them offer special coupons periodically. Also websites for the product can score you some sweet coupons!

Don't be afraid to look for other bloggers as well! Some of my favorites are The Frugal Free Gal and Feeding Four!

Happy couponing!

Review Secure Daughters Confident Sons

Read Chapter 1

Glenn T. Stanton has written a riveting book about girls, boys, men & women. He covers not only what to expect from our girls and boys, but how to help them achieve their best. This book isn't about pushing your children into stereotypical gender roles, but it's about recognizing the traits that males and females, across cultures and timelines, all display. I expected this to be a book about making my boy a better boy and my girl a better girl. It FAR exceeded my expectations.

More than just learning about better ways to parent my children, I learned about better ways to coparent with my spouse. I learned about understanding my own inclinations as well as his. The cultural lessons and history lessons were subtle, but fascinating as well. While I have never doubted that God created us as man and woman for a purpose, this book clearly and concisely covers why it is so important that we embrace our gender. He gives grounded scientific evidence against blurring the gender lines.

Stanton goes on to give personal examples from his own life about the effect a male parent and a female parent have on a child. He covers why it is so important to have both of those influences. He talks about intimacy and it's effects on our lives. He even covers topics to cover with older children to help them understand why abstinence before marriage is so important, not only spiritually but mentally and physically as well.

I just can't give enough praise for this book. I like that he covers both genders in one book. While I have found many great books about parenting just boys or just girls, I find that I will usually read one and not the other. Having both together is terrific! Even if you are the parent of only boys or only girls, you are gonna want to pick this one up. It will help you understand your parenting style, your child and the children they come into contact with. It's not a long exhausting book. The chapters are well laid out. If I had one negative thing to say, it would be that it ends rather flatly. I think in later editions, he may move the last couple of chapters around to end on a stronger note.

If you still aren't convinced, read the first chapter with the link above. That should be enough to hook you!

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. My opinions are my own and not influenced by the publisher or author.

What we've been working on....

Apple has dived right into the Hooked on Phonics 2nd grade edition. She is also moving right along with the Hooked on Spelling. I will say with the Spelling program, it is a bit tedious. I do think that it is improving her spelling, but it has not been easy. The program is for 5-8 yr olds. We are on the first set of two and about halfway through it and it is still working on all 3 letter words. She could do a lot of them before the program, and I really thought it would move on quickly, but so far it has not. The computer portion of the lesson is pretty long too. I know that repetition can be the key to learning but even I am thinking when will it ever end?? Anyhow we will wade through it! :)

She is also chugging right along in math. We have focused on pennies, nickels, dimes, o'clock, half hour, and addition and subtraction. We are up to double digit numbers now that she has mastered counting by 5s and 10s. We have also worked on some simple fractions.

She has finished the study we have on the continents. I was going to attempt to go back to learning the states, but I think we will put that on the back burner for right now. We are on track to finish her first grade Science book by the end of the semester. I want to reincorporate (is that a word?) art into her school time. I have gotten kind of lax about including it, but it is a major motivator for her!

Speedy is at the very beginning stages of recognizing letters and numbers and learning to write his name. We've also been working on learning his phone number and address. I must find more interactive, movement involved ways of teaching him. It is a work in progress.

They are both still working on their "God & Me" devos that they received for Christmas. We have also began using some great charts from Doorposts. The "If-Then" and the "Blessing" charts are wonderful. I encourage you to check out if you have not before!

We are receiving more snow this year then I ever remember having before! It is leading to some great discussions about the weather and weather patterns, but I am ready for warmer days so the kids can run off some energy!

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday Daddy. I wish you were here to enjoy the Super Bowl with me. I wish we could have laughed at the Packers together. I wish you could see how much Apple & Speedy love the game already. I miss you so. I still want to call you all the time. I want to share all the funny things with you. I can hear you laughing sometimes. I know you would find joy in your grandkids. I'm glad for Heaven and that I will see you again someday.

The Lord is my comfort in my pain. I miss my dad, I wish he was here, but I know God gave him the opportunity to go to a better place. We mourn the loss of another great man this weekend. I pray for that peace that passes understanding for his family.

Isaiah 12

Songs of Praise

1 In that day you will say:

“I will praise you, LORD.

Although you were angry with me,

your anger has turned away

and you have comforted me.

2 Surely God is my salvation;

I will trust and not be afraid.

The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense;

he has become my salvation.”

3 With joy you will draw water

from the wells of salvation.

4 In that day you will say:

“Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name;

make known among the nations what he has done,

and proclaim that his name is exalted.

5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things;

let this be known to all the world.

6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,

for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”
